Of course, when any bodybuilder decides to take their training to the next level, they will of course have to consider whether they need to bulk or cut.
Have you ever noticed how some bodybuilders look drastically different at some points in the year, compared to others?
Most commonly, unless they are competing in the winter, you will find that bodybuilders tend to have their off-season in the fall/winter months, where they basically intend to bulk up, and get as freakishly big as they can.
During their off-season, they will do what is known as ‘bulking’ where they increase their caloric intakes each day, in a bid to build as much muscle mass as possible.
Not only does their diet change, but so too does their training, though not as dramatically.
Come spring time, however, they may begin what is known as a ‘cut’.
Here, the intention is to strip away body fat whilst preserving as much muscle as possible.
When bulking or cutting, steroids can be incredibly useful, though again, in terms of how long does it take for steroids to work, well, there is no one clear answer.
What Are Steroids?
In simple terms, steroids are a type of hormone with a cholesterol backbone.
These compounds are organic and have profound effects on a person’s overall physique, as well as countless other physiological processes as well.
There are a number of anabolic steroids out there, and they are basically manufactured drugs created in a lab, which are designed to provide effects on the body which mimic anabolic hormones like testosterone.
This means that commonly, they can lead to vast increases in muscle strength, size, and definition, though different steroids have different effects.
Though they are designed to be used by bodybuilders, each one has a very different and unique effect on the body, which is why it is important that you know when to use certain steroids based upon your goals.
When To Use Steroids, And Which Ones Should Be Used?
As mentioned, bodybuilders will often bulk and cut throughout the year, and so obviously they will have different goals in mind.
If they are bulking, as calories will be so high, they won’t be as concerned with fat gain, loss of definition, and loss of vascularity, as they will be looking to build as much size as possible.
When cutting, the goal is to become as ripped and shredded as possible, which means losing fat and holding onto muscle.
Different steroids, however, have different results and different side effects, so you must know when to use each one.
If you are bulking up, steroids such as Anadrol and Dbol are ideal because they promote rapid increases in muscle size and strength.
However, they also cause a lot of bloating and water-retention, which is obviously not ideal for people trying to cut down for a contest or photo shoot.
For cutting, steroids such as Trenbolone and Winstrol are better, because they help build and preserve muscle, whilst increasing the metabolism and stripping away body fat, without causing bloating or water-retention.
How Long Does It Take For Steroids To Work?
In reality we can’t answer that question, because it is so vague.
Remember, different steroids have different results and side effects, because they’re all, well, different.
Bulking steroids will not necessarily work as quickly as cutting steroids, or vice versa.
For example, many users of Winstrol experience improvements to their physiques and athletic performances within 1 week, whereas users of D-bol may not notice results until around 4 weeks.

Now that we’ve looked at steroids and which may and may not be suitable for bulking and cutting, let’s now look at bulking.
Bulking is a process carried out by bodybuilders who are looking to bulk up and build as much muscle mass, size, and strength, as they possibly can.
When bulking, bodybuilders will change their diets as they will be eating much more food than they would when cutting.
This is because a caloric surplus must be achieved if muscle hypertrophy is to occur.
Put simply, if you aren’t taking in more calories than your body burns off for maintenance, you aren’t going to grow.
When bulking, bodybuilders can be as conservative, or as aggressive, with their bulks as they like, as it all comes down to genetics and personal preferences.
Different Forms Of Bulk
Clean bulking is a process where the bodybuilder will consume primarily fresh, healthy, and balanced food packed full of goodness.
As an example, for breakfast they may have oats with mixed berries and protein powder, and for their dinner they may have a sirloin steak, baked potato, asparagus, with a little sour cream.
Lean bulking creates a much smaller surplus in calories, so it will take longer to bulk up.
The benefits are that you keep fat gain to a minimum.
Now, on the flip side, we have what is known as ‘dirty bulking’. When dirty bulking, bodybuilders basically eat whatever they want, whenever they want.
They do not worry about nutrients or fat gain, and instead just focus on eating whatever they want.
Some dirty bulkers will be consuming up to 4000 calories more than their bodies need for maintenance.
Certain steroids do help keep fat gain under control, but they certainly can’t be described as being lean.
Some bodybuilders will literally blend cake, cereal, milk, and ice cream with weight gain powder.
Needless to say, this type of bulking is extremely dangerous, and can result in you putting on a lot of fat.
Cutting is a process in which bodybuilders attempt to strip away all of the fat they accumulated during their bulks, with the intention of revealing all of the muscle they built, that will have been hidden beneath the fat.
Bodybuilders that cut will often begin their cuts in early spring, so that they’re ready to hit the beaches in the summertime to reveal their ripped bodies.
Others, however, will begin their cut 12 weeks out from a competition.
With cutting, it’s important that you lose weight in a slow and controlled manner, otherwise you are at risk of losing muscle as well.
The key is to lose fat whilst preserving muscle, and this is not easy.
When cutting, bodybuilders will enter a caloric deficit, which means they are burning off more calories than their bodies require for maintenance.
To make up for this lack of calories, the body will tap into its fat stores.
When cutting, bodybuilders will often consume fairly plain and standard foods which are nutrient-dense and very healthy.
To help speed up fat loss, cardio is also often carried out several times each week.
The end result should be a vascular, ripped, lean, and shredded physique.
